What Is Professional Teeth Cleaning (Dental Scaling)?
Dental scaling (dental scaling) is the method used to remove tartar buildup and is an important part of maintaining oral health. Over time, plaque that accumulates on the tooth surface and along the gumline hardens into tartar that brushing alone cannot remove.
Performed with ultrasonic instruments, this procedure removes tartar and surface staining without damaging the enamel, helping prevent gum disease and cavities. It is recommended every 6 months.

How much is a dental cleaning in Turkey?
A full-mouth scale and polish starts at £50 at our clinic in Antalya. Deep cleaning below the gum line, where pockets have formed, is quoted per quadrant after your examination. Gum assessment and pocket charting are included.

How often should I have my teeth cleaned?
Twice a year for most people. More often if you have gum disease, implants or a full-arch bridge, where maintenance is what keeps the work in your mouth.

Why do my gums bleed when they are cleaned?
Because they are inflamed. Healthy gums do not bleed when scaled or brushed properly. Bleeding during cleaning is a sign of gingivitis, and it usually stops within one to two weeks of proper daily cleaning after the appointment.

Does scaling damage or loosen my teeth?
No. What can feel like loosening is the removal of hardened tartar that was splinting teeth together — the teeth were already mobile, the tartar was hiding it. Scaling does not remove enamel.

Is a cleaning the same as whitening?
No. Cleaning removes tartar and surface stain, returning teeth to their own natural shade. Whitening changes that shade. Cleaning comes first — whitening gel cannot work through tartar.

What is root planing and do I need it?
Root planing is deep cleaning below the gum line, used where pockets have formed and ordinary scaling cannot reach. Whether you need it is decided by pocket measurements, not by eye. We chart them and show you the numbers.

Do I need a cleaning before crowns or veneers?
Almost always. A ceramic margin placed against inflamed gums will look wrong within a couple of years as the gum recedes. Where your gums need treatment first, we plan it in rather than working around it.

Can it be done on the same trip as other treatment?
Yes, and it is normally scheduled first in the trip so that whitening, crowns or veneers follow on healthy gums.

A UK hygiene visit is typically £60–£120, so nobody flies to Antalya for a scale and polish. It is here because it is a prerequisite for almost everything else — whitening does not work through tartar, and ceramic margins on inflamed gums look wrong within two years.

What Happens in the Appointment
A single visit, usually forty-five minutes to an hour.
Step 1
Gum assessment
Pocket depths are measured around each tooth and recorded. This is what separates simple tartar from early gum disease, and it is the number that matters.
Step 2
Ultrasonic scaling
Hardened tartar is removed above and below the gum line. If your gums are inflamed they will bleed — that is the inflammation, not the instrument.
Step 3
Polish and stain removal
Surface staining from coffee, tea and tobacco is polished away. This is not whitening: it restores your natural shade rather than lifting it.
Step 4
Technique, honestly
Five minutes on what your brushing is actually missing, with interdental brush sizes matched to your gaps. This is the part that changes the next ten years.

Health tourism rules in Türkiye changed, and clinics can no longer book accommodation for patients. We refer you to partner hotels near the clinic that hold agreed rates for our patients, and you book directly with them.

The implant itself carries a lifetime guarantee. Zirconia crowns and bridges, E-max crowns, porcelain veneers and Hollywood smile restorations carry a five-year guarantee against fracture and debonding under normal use; a fractured unit is remade at no cost for the restoration. You receive the guarantee in writing with your treatment documents. Travel and accommodation for a return visit are not included, and if you grind your teeth, wearing the night guard we provide is a condition of the guarantee.

What Cleaning Does Not Fix
Worth knowing before you book
- Bleeding gums are not caused by brushing too hard. They are caused by inflammation. Healthy gums do not bleed when brushed properly. If yours bleed, that is a finding, not a technique problem.
- Bone that has been lost does not come back. Scaling stops the disease progressing and can let the gum tighten, but the bone level around a tooth is a one-way measurement. This is why the earlier you have it assessed, the better the outcome.
- A polish is not whitening. Removing stain returns your teeth to their own colour. If you want them lighter than that, whitening is a separate treatment and it should come after the cleaning, not before.
- Twice a year is not marketing. It is the interval at which tartar re-forms in most people. If you have implants or a full-arch bridge, it is not optional — peri-implantitis is the main reason implants are lost years after placement.
- If your gums are unhealthy, we will treat that before doing cosmetic work. It adds a visit and it is the difference between a result that still looks right in five years and one that does not.
