Results vary from person to person. How much lighter teeth become depends on the starting shade and on what caused the discolouration, so your dentist will tell you what is realistic for your teeth at the examination.
Your Whitening Appointment, Step by Step
This is the order we follow at the clinic, from the first check to the moment you see the new shade.
Examination and starting shade
A dentist checks your teeth and gums and records your starting shade. Decay or gum problems are treated first, because whitening gel should only go on healthy teeth.
Cleaning, if needed
Plaque and tartar stop the gel from working evenly. If your teeth need it, a scale and polish (from £50) comes before the whitening.
Gum protection
A protective barrier is placed along the gum line, so the gel touches only the teeth.
Whitening gel and light activation
A professional whitening gel is applied to the visible surfaces of the teeth and activated with a special light. This part takes around 45–60 minutes.
Shade check and aftercare advice
The gel and barrier are removed, the new shade is compared with the starting shade, and your dentist explains what to avoid over the next 48 hours.

Who Is Teeth Whitening Suitable For?
Whitening works best on healthy natural teeth that have yellowed or picked up stains over time. It is often a good fit if:
- your teeth have yellowed or are stained from coffee, tea, red wine or smoking;
- you want a brighter smile before a wedding, a holiday or another special occasion;
- you are planning crowns or veneers and want your natural teeth lighter first, so the new restorations can be matched to them.
Talk to the dentist first, or consider another option, if:
- you are pregnant or breastfeeding, when whitening is usually postponed;
- you have untreated decay, gum disease or very sensitive teeth;
- the teeth you want lighter are mainly crowns, veneers or large fillings, because whitening does not change their colour;
- the discolouration is grey or deep inside the tooth, for example after an injury or a root canal treatment; it may respond poorly, and composite bonding or veneers may suit you better.

How Many Shades Whiter Can Teeth Become?
Most people see their teeth become a few shades lighter, but we do not promise a fixed number before we have seen your teeth. The change depends on your starting colour and on the cause of the staining: yellowish staining from food, drinks and smoking tends to respond better than grey discolouration or stains deep inside the tooth.
Your dentist records the starting shade on a shade guide at the examination and compares it with the result at the end of the appointment, so you can see the difference on the guide as well as in the mirror.
Does Teeth Whitening Hurt? Sensitivity and Safety
Whitening is not painful for most people, but temporary sensitivity is common: teeth may feel sharp with cold drinks or cold air for a short while, and the gums can feel irritated where gel touched them. This usually settles on its own. Tell the dentist beforehand if your teeth are already sensitive, and message us if anything concerns you after the appointment.
Safety comes from supervision: an examination before treatment, a barrier that protects the gums, and gel applied by a dentist rather than a kit bought online. Done this way on healthy teeth, professional whitening does not damage tooth enamel. The NHS and the Oral Health Foundation both advise having whitening done by a dental professional.
Aftercare and How Long Whitening Lasts
For the first 48 hours, avoid coffee, tea, red wine, cola and other strongly coloured food and drink, and try not to smoke: teeth pick up new stains more easily in this period.
Results usually last one to two years, depending on your habits. Brushing twice a day, regular hygiene visits and cutting down on staining drinks all help. When the colour starts to fade, a top-up session or a dentist-supervised home kit can bring it back.
Teeth Whitening on Holiday in Antalya

Planning whitening into your trip

- Book early in your stay. If a clean is needed first, or the dentist suggests a second session, there is time for it.

Teeth Whitening vs Veneers
Whitening lightens your own teeth without removing any tooth structure. Veneers are thin shells bonded to the front of the teeth that change colour, shape and size together. If your teeth are a good shape and only the colour bothers you, whitening is the simpler and less expensive first step.
If you also want to change shape, close gaps or cover chips, compare porcelain veneers, E-max veneers and composite bonding. If you are planning veneers or crowns anyway, whitening usually comes first, so the new teeth can be made to match your lighter natural shade.
