Overview

You Are Not the Only One

Many people put off dental treatment for years because they are anxious about it — and travelling abroad for treatment can add to the worry. Most treatment, including implants, is done comfortably under local anaesthetic. For longer surgical treatment such as All-on-4 or the removal of impacted wisdom teeth, sedation is available as well.

This page explains the options, who sedation can help, how to prepare, and how to ask us whether it is suitable for your treatment.

The Options

From Local Anaesthetic to Sedation

  • Local anaesthetic numbs the area being treated. You are fully awake and feel pressure but not pain. It is used for almost all dental treatment — including alongside sedation.
  • Oral sedation is a tablet taken before the appointment that makes you calmer and drowsy.
  • Inhalation sedation is a mild sedative gas breathed through a small nose mask. It takes effect quickly and wears off soon after.
  • Intravenous (IV) conscious sedation is medicine given through a vein. You are deeply relaxed and may remember little of the treatment, but you can still respond. Breathing, oxygen levels and heart rate are monitored throughout.
  • General anaesthesia puts you fully to sleep. It is rarely needed for dental treatment.

Which of these is possible for your treatment, and how it would be arranged, is confirmed after your medical history has been reviewed.

Who It Helps

When Sedation Is Worth Asking About

Sedation can help if

  • Fear of dental treatment has stopped you from going for years.
  • You have a strong gag reflex.
  • Your plan involves a long surgical session — several implants, All-on-4, or several extractions.
  • You are having impacted wisdom teeth removed.

It may not be suitable if

  • You have certain heart, lung or breathing conditions, including sleep apnoea.
  • You are pregnant.
  • You take medicines that interact with sedatives.

None of these automatically rules you out; they are the reasons we ask for your full medical history first.

Preparation

Planning Sedation Into Your Trip

Before you travel

Medical history

Tell us about your health, any medicines (including blood thinners) and allergies, so the right option can be confirmed.

The day before

Fasting instructions

You will be told exactly when to stop eating and drinking. Follow them closely — they are there for your safety.

On the day

A companion

An adult should come with you and take you back to your hotel. No driving, alcohol or important decisions for the rest of the day.

Afterwards

A rest day

Plan at least a rest day between sedation and your flight home. Your dentist confirms the timing, especially after surgery.

Honest Answers

Worth Knowing Before You Ask

What sedation is — and is not

  • Sedation is not sleep. Except under general anaesthesia, you remain conscious and able to respond. Many people simply remember very little.
  • Local anaesthetic is still used. Sedation calms you; the local anaesthetic is what keeps the treatment painless.
  • It adds preparation and recovery time. Fasting, a companion and a rest day need to fit into your travel plans.
  • It is shown on your plan. If sedation is part of your treatment, it is listed on your written plan before you travel.
  • A clear plan helps too. Knowing exactly what will happen, agreeing a stop signal and taking breaks make a real difference for many anxious patients, with or without sedation.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is sedation available at Betadent?

Sedation is available for longer surgical treatment such as All-on-4 or the removal of impacted wisdom teeth. Whether it suits you depends on your treatment and your medical history — send us a message and we will tell you which options are possible.

  • Will I be asleep during sedation?

With conscious sedation, no: you are deeply relaxed and drowsy, you can still respond, and you may remember little afterwards. Only general anaesthesia puts you fully to sleep, and it is rarely needed for dental treatment.

  • Is dental sedation safe?

In suitable patients, with a proper medical assessment, fasting instructions and monitoring during treatment, sedation has a good safety record. That is why we review your health and your medicines before confirming it.

  • Do I need someone with me?

Yes. After sedation an adult should accompany you back to your hotel, and you should not drive, drink alcohol or sign important documents for the rest of the day.

  • Can I fly home straight after sedation?

No. Plan at least a rest day between sedation and your flight. Your dentist will confirm the timing, especially after surgery such as implants or a sinus lift.

  • Does sedation cost extra?

It depends on the type of sedation and the length of treatment. If it is part of your plan, it is listed on your written plan before you travel, so there are no surprises.
